Southampton Picks Royal Pier Winner

Southampton City Council has chosen the winning property company to redevelop the Royal Pier Waterfront site.
The local authority has plumped for Morgan Sindall Investments Limited who own amongst other firms, Muse, who have redeveloped Chatham Place in Reading, and St Paul's Square in Liverpool.
As part of the winning bid, Morgan Sindall will help to regenerate the nearby Mayflower Park that sits to the immediate north-west of the site, and make sure that the Royal Pier can continue to host the Southampton International Boat Show. There will also be improved pedestrian access to the waterfront, with a landmark tall building given a prominent position overlooking the sea, and demolition of an abandoned and dilapidated pier.
These are just the latest attempts to redevelop the area with the previous plans, that included 1,000 apartments and a large-scale land reclamation, shelved at the nadir of the credit crunch. Now that the local council has chosen the winning plans, for the £450 million scheme to progress they will have to file a planning application with the masterplan, and then detailed plans in due course.
These plans by architecture firm David Lock Associates, are expected to be available for public consultation later in 2011.
